In the tranquil waters surrounding St. Elizabeth, four dedicated students are not just teammates but also friends united by a shared passion for fishing. Nick Heckemeyer, Hudson Lane, Landon Plassmeyer, and Blake Wobbe represent the spirit of camaraderie and teamwork that defines their high school experience.

From the early mornings on the water to the rush of competition, these four athletes have learned valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and the power of friendship. “I have always enjoyed being outdoors and fishing, no matter what kind,” says Hudson Lane. “So when I had an opportunity to fish for school, I knew I wanted to do it.” For Blake Wobbe, the sport has always been a way to connect with friends. “The joy I get from playing sports is the time spent with friends and the experiences I get. Fishing has always been something I loved but doing it with friends for the school makes it even more special.”

Nick Heckemeyer echoed this sentiment, noting, “The most memorable moment has probably been winning state in fishing. It’s always fun getting together with the team. We spend time together fishing, but it’s the friendships that make it all worth it.” Landon Plassmeyer adds, “The greatest joy I get from fishing is being on the water with my closest friends, doing what I love most.” Together, they support each other not only in competition but in life.

The community’s role in the team’s journey has been instrumental. “The community has always been great to me,” says Hudson. “They’ve supported us by donations and at events. We couldn’t do it without them.” For Blake, the support is especially meaningful. “The community always comes out and supports our games. It’s amazing to see how much they care about us and what we’re doing.” Nick highlighted this further, saying, “The community has always supported our sports teams in many ways. They even helped redo the baseball field, along with some help from Diamond Pet Foods.” Such backing motivates the team to give their best— not only for themselves but for those who cheer them on.

The influence of family cannot be overstated in the journeys of these four young athletes. Landon’s parents added, “We are so happy to see Landon, Nick, (and the others) doing what they love. We are happy he finally found his passion.” Nick Heckemeyer’s parents, Curt and Rhonda, also offered their insights. “(Nick) has been blessed with truly amazing boat captains and fishing partners over the years. St. Elizabeth’s fishing program, run by Stacie Wieberg, has given him amazing opportunities to earn scholarship money for college while doing what he loves to do. We are so thankful for all the work Stacie puts into it.”

Hudson’s love for fishing stems from time spent with his grandfather. “He took me when I was very young and taught me how, and from that moment on I was hooked.” He’s very thankful for time spent with his family and how much love and support he gets, with his eldest brother serving as a role model. Also influenced by his older brother, Blake appreciates his family, too. “My family is always there to support me, no matter what.”

As the St. Elizabeth Fishing Team reels in success, it’s clear that the bonds formed between these four athletes go beyond the waters they navigate. Like the patience and precision required for a perfect cast, their journey through high school has been a series of deliberate, thoughtful efforts— building friendships, overcoming challenges, and staying anchored in their love for the sport. Together, Nick, Hudson, Blake, and Landon have learned that in both fishing and life, the best catches are the moments spent with those who support and inspire you. With each new competition and every shared memory, these teammates are hooked on the thrill of the adventure, knowing that the true rewards lie in the friendships they’ve caught along the way.
