“I WANT THEM TO REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN WORK HARD AND STILL ENJOY EVERYTHING YOU DO.” -Macie Statler
At Eugene High School, senior Macie Statler is proof that sports are more than just games—they’re opportunities for growth, connection, and joy. As a dedicated member of the varsity golf and cheerleading teams for four years, Macie has built a legacy of positivity, perseverance, and mentorship that resonates on and off the field.
Macie’s journey into golf began with a nudge from her parents, Jennifer and Mark, during her freshman year. What started as an experiment quickly turned into a passion. “I loved seeing my game improve and meeting new friends along the way.” With guidance from Coach Heidger, whom Macie describes as “amazing,” she honed her skills and achieved standout moments, including All-Conference honors during her senior season. Although she narrowly missed her goal of qualifying for state by a single stroke, Macie reflects on her season with pride. “I played some of my best golf on really tough courses.” One highlight she cherishes is placing individually at matches including at the Central State 8 Girls Golf Tournament.
Macie’s path in cheerleading, however, began with a dream of becoming the school mascot after moving to Eugene from Joplin in junior high. She became the mascot for a few seasons and then transitioned to cheering full-time and has never looked back. “I love watching basketball and cheering for it. The energy of the crowd supporting the players and our team is amazing.”
Now the only senior on the squad, she takes pride in mentoring younger teammates. “Helping the newer cheerleaders learn stunts and cheers has been one of my favorite parts of this year. I want them to enjoy cheer as much as I do.”
Macie’s leadership shines brightest on the court, where her cheer squad rallies support for both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. The demanding schedule can be exhausting, with several games throughout the week and weekend, but Macie embraces the challenge. Her secret to managing stress? “I listen to music, watch my favorite show, or call my friends to tune out the pressure.”
Off the court, Macie draws strength from her family. Her parents have been steadfast supporters, encouraging her to stay positive and work hard toward her goals. Her siblings, Andrew Statler and Caroline Williams, have also been by her side, cheering her on before tournaments and celebrating her successes. “Their support means the world to me.” The values her family has instilled in her—positivity, determination, and a strong work ethic—shape the way she approaches life and sports alike. Macie’s appreciation extends to her coaches and teachers, who have played pivotal roles in her journey. “Coach Heidger, Mrs. Dane, and Mrs. Ballew have all encouraged me so much.” She also credits Mrs. Cochran for her consistent support throughout the years. These mentors have not only guided her through challenges but have inspired her to give back by being a mentor herself.
As her high school years wind down, Macie is looking ahead to a bright future at Stephens College, where she plans to study fashion design. When she’s not cheering or playing golf, Macie explores her creative side through art, watercolor painting, and 3D design. She’s also a member of the Eldon FCCLA and enjoys hobbies like trout fishing, cooking, and styling clothes.
Macie’s goal is to leave behind a legacy of hard work and joy for the younger cheerleaders. “I want them to remember that you can work hard and still enjoy everything you do.” As her parents proudly put it, “Macie brings a lot of fun and joy into our family, especially with her infectious laugh. She faces obstacles and challenges with a determination to work through them. We’re grateful for the coaches and teachers who have helped her thrive at Eugene.” With her pom-poms in hand and a heart full of spirit, Macie Statler proves that she’s always ready to lift those around her to new heights.
