Emma Frey, a senior at Eugene High School, is a student-athlete whose passion for sports runs deep, not just because of the thrill of the game but because of the connections and memories that come with it. A key player on her volleyball team, she also excels in golf, archery, and trap shooting, showing her dedication to both team and individual sports. But for Emma, it’s about more than just winning; it’s about growing with her teammates, family, and her faith.
Emma’s love for volleyball began at an early age, thanks to her mom, Michelle, who coached her from second grade through eighth grade. “My mom’s passion and love for the game led me to love it too. I remember being so little, sitting at her practices, watching the older girls play. The excitement was contagious.”
As a senior now, Emma reflects on how much those early experiences shaped her journey. “Volleyball has taught me the importance of teamwork and trust. You can’t win alone; it takes the whole team.”
One of her most memorable moments came last year when the volleyball team won districts. “The excitement was unbelievable. It’s something I’ll never forget.” As a player who’s been on varsity all four years, she’s earned a spot on the First All-Conference and First All-District teams, proving that her hard work pays off.
Emma’s athletic prowess doesn’t stop with volleyball. Golf, a sport she picked up almost on a whim, has become another arena where she thrives. “I didn’t even own a set of clubs when I first started. But they needed more players for the girls’ team, and I thought, ‘Why not?’” Despite the initial challenge, Emma’s dedication to improving her skills in golf has been steadfast… “Golf has really taught me patience and calmness, something I needed since volleyball is so fast-paced. It’s a different mindset, and I love that.”
A hunter in her free time, Emma naturally gravitated toward archery and trap shooting, both sports she enjoys for their connection to her love of the outdoors. “Archery and trap shooting are things I’ll be able to do well into adulthood. It’s a fun way to practice for hunting season, too.” Growing up on her family’s farm, Emma is no stranger to hard work, a trait she credits to her dad, Mark, and her late grandpa. “Farm work, especially during the hot summer months, is some of the best conditioning you can do.”
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Emma’s faith plays a central role in her life. “God gave me the ability to play these sports, and I always make it a priority to thank Him for that.” Emma serves as the FFA president, National Honor Society president, and class president, leading by example in everything she does. “I want to inspire others to work hard and be kind. Leadership is about lifting people up, not just being in charge.”
Emma’s family is her biggest support system. Her younger brothers, Eli and Ethan, are her biggest fans, always cheering her on from the stands. “I can always hear them yelling, ‘You got this, Emma!’ before I serve.” Her parents are always there for her too, attending every game they can and encouraging her along the way. “My family is my rock. I appreciate that no matter how busy they are, they always find time to be there for me.” Her parents added, “Emma has such a great heart. She’s dependable, hardworking, and has this way of making people laugh. We couldn’t be more proud of the person she’s become. Her love for life is contagious!”
Looking beyond high school, Emma plans to attend State Fair Community College, where she’ll use her A+ scholarship to study elementary education. “I love kids, and I can’t wait to be a teacher.” With her dedication, faith, and strong work ethic, Emma is sure to continue making her family, teammates, and community proud.
