Clayton Moore thrives on competition. As a senior at North Callaway High School, he juggles football, basketball, golf, and FFA trapshooting with a calm confidence. “I’ve been playing sports since grade school. The competitiveness of each one is what keeps me coming back.” Whether it’s a hard-hitting tackle on the football field or lining up a birdie putt on the golf course, Clayton approaches every moment with grit and a touch of humor.
For Clayton, football has always been about controlled chaos. Playing as both a defensive end and running back, he relishes the physicality and camaraderie. “Football is fun because you get to hit people with pads on, and you’re part of a team while doing it. How can that not be fun?” he jokes. Clayton’s favorite football moments include helping his team secure the Callaway Cup and earn an 8-2 record. His standout season also earned him a spot on the All-Conference defensive team.
Basketball offers its own set of challenges and rewards. As a forward, Clayton loves battling in the paint, a position that demands both strength and finesse. “Winning districts was probably the best moment… Coach Miller, though, is what makes basketball special. He pushes us hard but always teaches us to be mentally tough. That’s something I’ll carry with me forever.” Clayton’s leadership extends beyond game time; he prides himself on guiding younger teammates and making practices enjoyable, even when the drills get grueling.
Golf, a more solitary pursuit, balances out Clayton’s busy sports life. He appreciates the mental discipline the sport requires. “You have to stay strong mentally in golf, and I like the challenge of that.” Clayton’s hobbies, including hunting, taxidermy, and 3D archery, also highlight his love for precision and focus.
Family is at the heart of everything Clayton does. His parents, David and Kristen, have been his most dedicated supporters, attending nearly every game. “My dad is my role model. He’s taught me that family is number one and that you have to earn what you work for. He’s the perfect example of what I want to be.” His mom is the steady force behind the scenes, always there with encouragement or a reality check. And then there’s Kaleigh, his older sister, whose competitive spirit fuels his own drive. “We’ve always been competitive with each other, and it’s definitely helped me in sports.”
In addition to family, Clayton credits his community for shaping him into the athlete and person he is today. “My friends, family, and church have always supported me. I love being part of this small community.” It’s clear that Clayton values the lessons he’s learned through sports—lessons of effort, reward, and the importance of teamwork.
Looking ahead, Clayton plans to attend State Tech and study utilities technology, but for now, his focus is on leaving a legacy at North Callaway. “I want the underclassmen to look at me and think, ‘I want to be like him because he worked his tail off and didn’t hold grudges.’” His dedication to his team, his school, and his family speaks volumes.
From the football field to the basketball court to the golf course, Clayton has mastered the art of blending hard work with good-natured competitiveness. He may describe himself as always moving, always busy—but his teammates and coaches know him as the guy who’s always there, always reliable. His parents added, “Sports have provided a fun way for his playfulness and energy to get direction and create goals. He has been able to learn for himself the differences in effort and reward. There is always a lesson in life that can be explained through sports, helping to understand the big picture of life.”
When it comes to Clayton Moore, one thing’s certain: whether he’s sinking putts, baskets, or offenses, he’s always swinging for the green, shooting for the win, and tackling life head-on.
