For Fulton High School senior Brilee Ash, softball has always been more than a game. It’s been a stage for growth, a haven for friendships, and a family tradition. From her earliest days tagging along to her brother, Nicholas’s, baseball practices to committing to play collegiate softball at Central Methodist University, Brilee’s love for the sport has grown steadily over the past decade.

“I’ve always felt softball was in my blood,” reflecting on her family’s deep connection to the sport. Her great-grandfather, Bob Nichols, was inducted into the American Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1989, and her dad, Mitch, is her “built-in catcher” who never shies away from the bucket. Her mom, Carissa, is her “best friend” and #1 cheerleader, attending every game and supporting Brilee’s journey every step of the way.

Brilee’s journey began at just seven years old when she joined the 10U Crush team under the guidance of coaches Josh Lux, Eric Reynolds, and Curt Rackers. Their belief in her potential laid the foundation for a softball career filled with growth and camaraderie. Over the years, Brilee has played for several teams, including Crush, Texas Glory, and Aces, always finding teammates who become lifelong friends. “My teammates are what I love most about softball. We celebrate each other’s victories and support each other on the tough days. The memories we’ve created on and off the field—road trips, early mornings, and late-night adventures—are some of my favorites.”

Those memories include unforgettable moments with friends, like navigating tornados, stuffing bellman’s carts with luggage, and bonding over QuikTrip stops and Scheels visits. Softball has been a passport to experiences and relationships that go beyond the diamond. Her time at Fulton High School has been equally impactful. As a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, Brilee has earned All-Conference honors every year since her freshman season, All-District every year since sophomore season, and All-Region recognition as a sophomore and junior. Her pitching coach, Tyler Stark, describes her as “entertaining to coach,” while Brilee herself thrives on the challenge of improving her speed, strength, and mental focus.

“Softball has taught me discipline, focus, and the importance of teamwork. These lessons carry over into every part of my life, from school to relationships.” Leadership is another hallmark of Brilee’s journey. She credits her involvement in Fulton High School’s student council and leadership class, led by advisor, Janet Trowbridge, with shaping her ability to remain composed and positive. “Mrs. Trowbridge has been incredible in teaching me how to handle situations calmly and with kindness.”

As Brilee prepares for her future, she holds tightly to her family’s values of hard work, compassion, and respect for others. Her nana, Sue Ash, and grandparents, Dennis and Debbie Nichols, have been steadfast sources of encouragement. “My family has taught me that you get out of life what you put into it. Their love and support mean everything to me.” Brilee’s next chapter at CMU will allow her to continue playing the sport she loves while pursuing a degree in nursing. Her parents are thrilled to see her take the field as a CMU Eagle, adding “Brilee is everyone’s friend. She wants people to feel included and like they belong. We couldn’t be prouder of her.”

Softball may be a game of innings, but for Brilee, it’s also about the connections made, lessons learned, and dreams realized. Whether it’s striking out opponents on the mound or pitching in to help a teammate through a tough day, Brilee approaches every challenge with grit and gratitude. As she steps onto the next diamond in her life, one thing is certain: Brilee Ash will always be swinging for the fences—both in softball and in life. It’s safe to say, the field won’t be the same without her curveballs or her unyielding pitch-perfect spirit.
