The Longhorns managed just a single win after finishing second in the district the previous year. Year two for Jehling should be better with a stable of starters returning. A total of seven Horns are back on offense, headlined by running back Tyrese White. The senior enters his final year wearing the blue and gold with over 3,000 career rushing yards. At quarterback, it will be sophomore Marcus Morris and senior Matt Conkle battling it out for the starting spot. Hamshire-Fannett has a whopping eight back on defense. Linebacker Reese Rubio is coming off a junior season that saw him record 85 tackles, including five sacks. The Longhorns struggled to stop teams in 2016, as they gave up 39 points a game. For Hamshire-Fannett to a have a realistic shot at a return to the playoffs after missing out, that number must be much lower. The Longhorns open the year with back-to-back road games at Bridge City and Lumberton to start the season. On September 15th, the home schedule gets underway with the annual Rice Bowl against East Chambers. District play starts off with a huge test as Hamshire-Fannett plays host to defending State Champion West Orange-Stark.
