class 2a CLASS 2A By Thomas Bingham Photos by Tishy Bryant and Dorsey make up a strong junior class and the senior Miller adds to the upperclassmen depth. Jones is coming off the Newcomer of the Year honor, Sam was first-team, all-district, Dorsey was a second-teamer and Miller was an honorable mention. Big Sandy (20-2A) is coming off an incredible season, but it could take a dip this season. It lost a lot of players from its trip to state and junior Samuel Richard (G) is the lone returning letterman. He’ll be the team’s top option because there isn’t a senior on the roster. If you know anything about him, you know this is a good sign. He’s a highly talented athlete, who was named first-team, all-region last season. He also averaged nine points per game. Colmesneil (23-2A) will be a young team this season and only three starters are back. That’s why Kamron Lindsey and Isaac Dinger need to step up this year. Both return for their junior year and both earned a district honor last season. Lindsey was a second-teamer and Dinger was an honorable mention. Evadale (24-2A) has a chance to do something special this year. Ten players return from last year’s squad and eight were named to the all-district team. Brady Griffin, Tyler Torres and Coy Williams are the headliners, but there’s more gold to be found. Daniel Bean and Zack Stark were second-teamers and Jonathan Gravis, Grant Harrington and Jacob Splawn were honorable mentions. Seven of them are upperclassmen so that helps the team too. The seniors are Griffin, Bean, Stark and Harrington, and the juniors are Torres, Williams and Gravis. The lone underclassmen is Splawn and he’s a sophomore. Sabine Pass (24-2A) will build on last year’s winning record because plenty of talent is back this season. The Sharks are led by Jamyus Jones, Daniel Sam, Jamal Dorsey and Brayden Miller. Four of its players earned all-district honors last season, so that’s a great starting point. Kaleb Andrus and Cody Brown are the biggest names because they were first and second-team, respectively. They’re joined by honorable mentions Josiah Atkinson and Jay Hughs. All are upperclassmen so the experience is there. Andrus and Atkinson are seniors, and Brown and Hughs are juniors. Hull-Daisetta (24-2A) strengthens the district even though it didn’t finish last season with a winning record. Kyle Rayon, Bryce Fregia and Dylan Vernon are the reasons. They all earned district honors in 2016 and they’re all back for another year. Fregia and Vernon were honorable-mentions and Rayon was a second-teamer. Deweyville (24-2A) closes out the district. Its edge is dropping a classification in the most recent realignment. West Hardin (24-2A) is coming off a losing record, but it has the 28 :: VYPE :: n ov 2016 :: vypeSETX.com
